Setup Guide: Synology Photos
This guide will configure your phone to back up your photos to Memento.
⚠️ CRITICAL PRE-FLIGHT CHECK: The iCloud "Optimized Photos" Trap
Before opening the Synology Photos app, you must check one setting on your iPhone.
"Optimized iPhone Storage" is a problem
If you're using iCloud, make sure to "Download and Keep Originals". Otherwise, you'll be backing up low-quality thumbnails.
How to Check: 1. Open iPhone Settings > Photos. 2. Look at the checkmark under **"iCloud Photos".
If "Download and Keep Originals" is checked: * ✅ You are good.
If "Optimize iPhone Storage" is checked: * ⚠️ STOP and switch it.
Step 1. Log In to Photos & SKIP the Enable Backup Wizard

[Your Credentials] - HTTPS: Checked ✅
- QuickConnect ID:
- Critical Step: When asked to "Enable Photo Backup," tap Skip.
- We need to change a file naming setting first.
Step 2. Configure "Clean" Settings
Backup is OFF:
1. Tap the More icon (bottom right).
2. Tap Settings > ✅ Rename by Date Taken > On > Close Settings.
* This renames every file to its exact timestamp (e.g., IMG_20251225_0900.jpg). It will prevent duplicate filenames and a mess in your timeline.
3. Tap Photo Backup > Select Enable.
- Backup Destination:
- Default Folder ✅
- Auto-create year/month folder - On
- ⚠️ This is critically important. Over time, thousands of photos in a single folder will cause issues.
Backup has started
The first backup can take hours or days. Use Focused Backup. Change your Auto Lock setting to never lock.
